WAYS for FAMILIES to FIGHT

HUNGER in ARLINGTON

There are many things families can do to help the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) fight hunger in Arlington.

All volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a copy of the Minor Hold Harmless form signed by a parent or guardian to volunteer at AFAC.

Poster Making & Leafleting

If your children like to color, help AFAC publicize the Boy Scout Food Drive in November and the Letter Carriers Food Drive in May by making posters and hanging them in your neighborhood.

Your family can volunteer while taking an evening stroll around the neighborhood. AFAC has had great success publicizing big food drives by having volunteers leaflet neighborhoods. Contact Laura Jackson at laura.jackson@afac.org if your family is willing to help make posters or leaflet.

Bagging Nights

Children ages 10 and up are welcome to volunteer with their parents at Wednesday Drop-in Bagging Nights. Click here for the full schedule. Families larger than 3 should email us to register.

Family Bagging Nights are the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm. Families need to register to participate by emailing volunteer4afac@afac.org. Family Bagging Nights are perfect for children ages 5-10. You can read our Family Bagging Night policies here.

Gleaning

Enjoy some family time picking squash or digging for potatoes for AFAC. Contact Puwen Lee at puwen.lee@afac.org to find out how to arrange for a fall or spring gleaning day.

Enoy Gardening?

Plant some tomato and pepper seedlings for AFAC clients who have gardening space and for community gardeners who are participating in our Plot Against Hunger project.  Start a garden in your child's school or at your faith-based organization.  For information, contact Puwen Lee  at puwen.lee@afac.org.  Seeds available.

Bake Sales, Lemonade Stands & Yard Sales

Turn your children's entrepreneurial efforts into a fundraising project for AFAC.

Neighborhood Food Drives

Over 65% of the food AFAC distributes is donated.  Your family can organize neighborhood food drive.  More information, including customizable flyers, can be found on our website’s food drive page.  Please contact Carl Crockett, AFAC’s food drive coordinator, for more information on food drives – carlton.crockett@afac.org.

Please contact Puwen Lee, Mona Bormet, Laura Jackson or Danielle Rampton
in the Volunteer Department at AFAC (volunteer4afac@afac.org or 703-845-8486)
for more information about any of these opportunities.
