Weekend Volunteer Opportunities

Weekend Produce Bagging

Weekend volunteers do a variety of tasks, including bagging produce and dry goods, cleaning the warehouse, and sorting food donations. We have weekend volunteer sessions on Saturdays, 12:30-2:30, and Sundays, 1:30-3:30pm through December. January through April we will have a Saturday session only.

Children ages 12 and older are welcome to volunteer but should be closely supervised by their parents. No child under 14 can volunteer without a parent or guardian.

We ask all volunteers to register so we have the right number of volunteers for the work to be done. To register, please complete the volunteer profile form. We will be in touch by email with further instructions on signing up to help.

If you are already registered in our online system, you can use this link to the weekend calendar. This link only works for those already in our new system. If you have forgotten your login information, email us at volunteer4afac@afac.org so we can help.

Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and should dress in layers to work in the warehouse.

All minors must be picked up promptly at the end of the session. Because the session can end early, parents should be available for an early pick-up.

Go Glean for AFAC

Help AFAC by picking fresh vegetables and fruits from local farms and orchards.  Or sort vegetables and fruits indoors.  Your group can arrange to glean fields with the Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network, one of AFAC's local partners.  Some of the produce you pick can be brought back to AFAC and a portion will go to other food banks. Contact Puwen Lee at puwen.lee@afac.org or (703) 845-8486 for information about gleaning. Learn more about gleaning opportunities here.

Gardener?

Join AFAC's Plot Against Hunger program.  Plant some tomato and pepper seedlings for AFAC clients who have gardening space and for community gardeners who are participating in our Plant a Row for the Hungry project.  Have surplus vegetables over the summer months? Donate them!  Start an extra row or two of vegetables and mark it "Stake Against Hunger".  Start a garden in your child's school or at your faith-based organization.  For information, contact Puwen Lee  at puwen.lee@afac.org.  Seeds available.
