Events Throughout The Year

Hunger Action Month is a month-long awareness campaign to inspire action against hunger. Throughout the month of September, AFAC will work with local partners to educate the community about food insecurity and to invite all to join in the task of feeding our neighbors in need. With full plates and full hearts, you can help end hunger.

Enjoy a nice September day at the Army Navy Country Club for 18 holes of fun while helping feed our neighbors in need. Event features a lunch and dinner, drinks, a silent auction, and credits to spend at the club's pro shop.

Canstruction is an international design competition that invites teams of designers to create structures using canned food, which is then donated to those in need. The AIA Northern Virginia Competition is entering its second decade, donating all the cans to AFAC. Through the competition, the Chapter has become one of AFAC's top donors and was recently recognized as AFAC's 2014 Community Partner of the Year!

AFAC teams up with the National Association of Letter Carriers for a large food drive event called Stamp Out Hunger, which is held on the 2nd Saturday of every May. Residents leave food donations by their mailboxes and postal workers would pick up the food and deliver it to AFAC. On average, around 25,000 pounds of food donations is collected in this one-day event.

With the assistance of Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs from the Chain Bridge District of the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, our Scouting for Food Drive is AFAC's largest single day food drive. This partnership has collected over 1 million pounds of food since 1995. Each year, Scouting for Food is held on the second Saturday of every November.

Empty Bowls is an annual luncheon fundraiser that features hand thrown ceramic bowls made by local potters and ceramicists, and soups, breads, and desserts donated by local restaurants, bakeries, and volunteers.
